Album Review: Defiance, Ohio “Midwestern Minutes”

This is Defiance, Ohio’s fourth full-length album if I am not mistaken and it pretty much keeps in tradition with the past three. If you’ve heard these Columbus, Ohio folk-punkers before then you know what I’m talking about.

These six ladies and gents play a vast arsenal of instruments, such as banjo, piano, cello, as well as the staple of guitar, bass, and drums. All six share vocal duties. The one thing about this album that I noticed is that is seems a little more subdued than past releases. That is not a bad thing and subdued may not be the right word I’m looking for. I mean as far as lyrical content goes, the formula is still intact, but musically it just seems that it lacks the attack they’ve had on past albums. To me it seems a bit more mature musically, slower in parts, more together, but absolutely still as punk as ever, just could appeal to a wider audience while maintaining their well-earned “street cred”. All in all a solid effort, and after a few more listens, it may become my favorite of the lot.
