I have yet to find any discernible definition for the term “alt-country” – I suppose that’s why I’m so drawn to everything it classifies.  The “country” brand has always been judged against the conventionally held standards set by godfathers/mothers like Hank Williams, George Jones and Patsy Cline.  Someone out there will always say it’s “too rough,” “too polished,” “too much electric guitar,” or “not enough banjo,” to be dubbed country.  But nothing is too uncomfortable in the alt-country genre.  Without the idealistic barriers and preconceived notions of tradition, artists have the breathing room to actually be artists. They can appreciate the classic style of country music while incorporating all influences – blues, rock, pop, bluegrass, even rap.

Canadian three-piece Elliott BROOD is no exception. Classified as “alt-country” and occasionally “death country,” they have one of the most unique, punk-rootsy sounds out there. Last year, the BROOD released their most amplified project yet, Days Into Years. The album is a glorious testament to the band’s matured songwriting – inspired by a 5-day traipse through WWI battlefields and cemeteries, it’s an emotionally charged album with a respectfully subdued, denser vibe that appropriately matches the subject matter.  Foregoing their previously sparse, acoustic texture for a much heavier electric guitar, it’s a staunch departure from anything they have produced thus far.  Days into Years signifies a step forward, by ironically looking backward, with a musical and lyrical depth that will captivate new and old fans alike.

Fresh off a run of Canadian tour dates this summer, Elliott BROOD will be linking up with Wintersleep later this month to promote Days into Years across America. Tour dates can be found below.
